FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) - Authorities say a Farmerville town employee has admitted she stole more than $26,000 in cash in order to pay bills and to purchase personal items.

The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1L85Mt3) 31-year-old Crystal Kiante Meeking was booked into the Union Parish Detention Center on Monday charged with felony theft of more than $25,000. She has been released on a $10,000 bond.

Sheriff Dusty Gates said Meeking cooperated fully with authorities during an investigation that began in May. An internal auditor had discovered discrepancies concerning a water utility deposit payment made by a customer. Further investigation revealed that a receipt for the payment had been voided by Meeking.

Online jail records did not list an attorney for Meeking.
