TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Crews continue to work to clear trails in Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties following severe weather that downed many trees earlier this month.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Thursday that the Grand Traverse Motorcycle Trail and the Muncie Lakes Pathway in Grand Traverse County are closed along with the Leetsville ORV Trail and the Skegemog Swamp Pathway in Kalkaska County.

Dave Lemmien, DNR unit manager for the Traverse City Forest Management Unit, says the areas are “unsafe for people to use.”

The northern Lower Peninsula trail segments will be reopened once DNR staff is able to assess damage and help clear the areas. Local agencies and volunteers also are working on the trails. The region, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, was particularly hard hit.
