NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - A Springfield man has been sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison for killing a father and daughter when his SUV plowed into their motorcycle while he was driving high on heroin.

Forty-five-year-old James Ainsworth was sentenced Thursday in Superior Court in Northampton, more than a month after pleading guilty to motor vehicle homicide and manslaughter.

Prosecutors say Ainsworth was high on heroin and nodding off when his SUV crossed the center line and struck a motorcycle on Route 5 in Easthampton in August 2014. The crash killed 62-year-old Edward McGrath of Holyoke and 29-year-old Brittany McGrath of Brooklyn, New York.

The McGraths’ relatives wanted Ainsworth to spend the rest of his life in prison. Family members said Thursday they were both disappointed and relieved the case was over.
