KITTANNING, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania jail warden has been suspended without pay after an inmate escaped and allegedly killed an acquaintance while on the run.

Armstrong County’s prison board voted Thursday to sideline David Hogue while 38-year-old Robert Crissman’s escape is investigated.

Crissman escaped from the county jail July 30 while delivering breakfast to other inmates. An outside investigator is being hired to review the incident.

Sheriff William Rupert says Crissman walked outside to get the meals from a truck and took off. He had been jailed for violating his probation on a drug case and didn’t have a record for violent crimes.

The body of 55-year-old Tammy Long was later discovered beaten and strangled at a nearby home.

A judge Wednesday ordered Crissman held for trial on criminal homicide and other charges.
