DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Brookston woman to 25½ years in prison for the stabbing death of her aunt.

Lydia Marie Barney pleaded guilty in April to intentional second-degree murder. She admitted that she used a kitchen knife to stab 31-year-old Waubunoquay (wah-boo-NAW’-kay) Dawn Randall in the victim’s home on the Fond du Lac Reservation last October. Barney said she knew what she was doing and wasn’t acting in self-defense when she cut her aunt’s neck.

St. Louis County District Judge Sally Tarnowski handed down Barney’s sentence Thursday.
