SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Two charter schools are facing closure this fall due to academic and budget issues.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1UHO3ua) both Salt Lake County charter schools were on probation, and the Utah State Charter School Board could make a final decision to close the facilities by September or sooner.

The multi-campus Alianza Academy and the Wasatch Institute of Technology have until Tuesday to appeal and start a process that could last through December.

Cindy Phillips has been the chairwoman of Alianza Academy for less than two weeks, and says she’s disappointed the board doesn’t want to give the school a chance to operate this year after it restructured its administration.

She said an appeal is likely.

Wasatch Institute of Technology officials could not be immediately contacted Thursday.
