SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - By placing third in a national competition a northern Michigan community gets $40,000 to help improve its ice arena - and another crack at the grand prize next year.

The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie reports (https://bit.ly/1DPuXhB ) officials got the check for the Pullar Community Building last month after the Kraft Hockeyville USA contest. The third-place finish came after an essay written by Sault Ste. Marie native Ron Maleport.

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Anthony Bosbous says the money from the Kraft Foods’ competition “will go a long way in working to preserve the Pullar experience.” They had sought a $150,000 top prize.

The Pullar has already undergone major renovations in recent years. And officials say they will be working to bring the grand prize home next year.
