JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A 49-year-old man died at a Juneau correctional center one day after being brought in on a non-criminal hold.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle says she can’t speak to specifics of Joseph Murphy’s case, citing an ongoing investigation.

But she says a non-criminal hold often applies to someone brought in to sober up or who may have behavioral health issues and needs to be held for a bit for his protection or that of others.

The department says Murphy died Friday morning at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. He had been held there since Thursday.

Daigle said an autopsy was planned.
