BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Bail has been set for a Vermont woman charged in a fatal car crash on Interstate 89.

A judge ordered Thursday that Karri Benoir of Barre be held on $100,000 bail.

Benoir is expected to be released from the hospital Thursday night. If she is unable to post bail, she will be sent to jail after her release.

Benoir pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges on Monday over the phone.

Police said the 23-year-old intended to kill herself when she crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle in Richmond on July 30. The crash killed 30-year-old Brendon Cousino of Richmond.

Her lawyer asked for her to be released into her parent’s custody. But prosecutors argued that Benoir is a danger to herself and the public.

She is due back in court next week.
