WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced the appointment of a new head of the Department of General Services.

The mayor said Friday she has appointed retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Christopher E. Weaver as head of the department, which acquires and manages properties for the city’s government agencies. A Navy biography says Weaver graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1971 and holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University.

Bowser says Weaver will assume responsibility for the agency in the coming weeks. The agency’s interim director, Jonathan Kayne, will become Chief Operating Officer.
