WASHINGTON (AP) - Court documents show a 7-year-old was playing with a gun he got from a 17-year-old relative when he fatally shot his 3-year-old sister inside their southeast Washington apartment.

The 17-year-old has been charged as a juvenile with child cruelty and handgun offenses.

The Washington Post (https://tinyurl.com/odtsuj2) reports that court documents show the 17-year-old gave the 7-year-old boy a nylon bag with the 9mm handgun inside. According to the documents, the boy told police he took the gun out and started playing with it in a bedroom. The boy told police he accidentally pulled the trigger.

His 3-year-old sister, Dalis Cox, was shot in the chest and died. The shooting occurred on July 29.
