BELLEROSE, N.Y. (AP) - A bridge on the Queens-Nassau County border has been named after a slain police officer.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1JWSTk2 ) says Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Thursday that named the Jericho Turnpike bridge the Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge.

Lopez, of Babylon, was killed near the bridge that spans the Cross Island Parkway in Bellerose.

The Nassau County officer and a partner were pursuing a suspect who fled the scene of an accident in October 2012. When Lopez approached the suspect’s stopped car in Queens, the suspect fired, striking Lopez in the chest.
