CUERO, Texas (AP) - A now-former Texas police officer faces up to 10 years in prison for running over his Department of Public Safety trooper wife during an argument.

The Victoria Advocate (https://bit.ly/1JXsSRI ) reports Corey Tolbert on Thursday pleaded no contest to reckless assault causing serious bodily injury.

Tolbert was a Cuero (KWER’-oh) police sergeant. Elizabeth Tolbert was a state trooper. Both resigned following the 2014 incident that left her hospitalized.

Corey Tolbert says he accidentally ran over his wife with a trailer being pulled by a truck. Texas Rangers determined the woman was injured following a night of drinking and working on water wells at their home.

The penalty phase begins Tuesday. Attorneys for Corey Tolbert, who originally was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, seek probation.

The Tolberts remain married.
