LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The former postmaster in the Lincoln County community of Capitan has been sentenced to three years’ probation and a fine for embezzling more than $450,000 from the post office where she worked.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says in a statement that 56-year-old Kristi Sepkowitz of Alto was sentenced in federal court in Las Cruces on Thursday.

Sepkowitz admitted in a plea agreement that she embezzled money in 2012 and 2013 by issuing postal money orders to herself without paying for them and taking cash from daily postal deposits. She tried to pay back the money by writing personal checks and depositing them with the daily deposits.

She has since repaid all the money.
