SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants got into the mix for Chase Utley, making a trade offer to the Philadelphia Phillies after the second baseman cleared waivers this week.

Giants general manager Bobby Evans says in a text message there’s “nothing new today” on any potential acquisition. Several other teams are expected to compete for Utley’s services.

The 36-year-old Utley has spent all 13 of his major league seasons with the Phillies and might opt to join a team where he can count on starting for the remainder of the season. He can veto any trade.

San Francisco All-Star second baseman Joe Panik is working to recover from inflammation in his back that has sidelined him since Aug. 2. Manager Bruce Bochy said he is unlikely to return from the disabled list when eligible Monday.
