SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has called lawmakers into a special session next week to consider a new location for the state prison.

The Utah Legislature is expected to meet Wednesday to decide whether to approve a site near the Salt Lake City airport.

A legislative committee chose the site near the state’s capital city this week to build a larger, modern facility to replace the aging prison in Draper.

Many in Salt Lake City oppose the move they say will hurt property values and choke development.

The Prison Relocation Commission also looked at sites in Grantsville, Eagle Mountain and Fairfield before making their selection. Those sites were also opposed by locals who said the prison should stay in Draper. Supporters of the move say the 700-acre site near tech companies is primed for development.
