CLEVELAND (AP) - Police say a man has died and a Cleveland detective is hospitalized after a car crashed head-on into the detective’s undercover vehicle.

Cleveland police say officers on Thursday tried to stop a car driven by a man who they believed had been involved in a drug transaction. Police say the man sped off and caused one accident that injured a motorist. Police say the man then turned the car around after approaching a construction site, lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting the detective’s unmarked car head-on.

The driver, who’s not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The detective had to be removed from his vehicle by firefighters. A police union official says the detective suffered a collapsed lung, a broken leg and other injuries.
