INDIANA, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man has been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial in the bludgeoning death of his mother, a retired Indiana University of Pennsylvania professor.

Thirty-seven-year-old Todd Walters is charged in Indiana County in the death of 72-year-old Ruth Shirey, a longtime geography professor found unconscious in her home Feb. 20.

A judge agreed with defense attorney Leonard Ambrose III who argued Thursday that his client is not competent to proceed without further medical treatment.

District Attorney Patrick Dougherty (DOH’-her-tee) agreed that Walters has been receiving treatment, but has not improved significantly.

Walters’ father has told authorities that his son hadn’t been taking prescribed medications for his mental health issues.

He’ll remain in the Indiana County Jail without bond until a space in a state psychiatric hospital becomes available.
