NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A 17-year-old New Bedford youth has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in the city this month.

The Bristol district attorney’s office announced that Darian Cardoza is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in adult court on charges including murder in connection with the shooting death of 24-year-old Jeffrey Sylvia Jr.

State police and New Bedford police arrested Cardoza on Thursday.

Police went to the intersection of Acushnet Avenue and Blackmer Street at about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 2 after the city’s gunshot detection system indicated shots fired in that area. They found the victim lying at the intersection. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not disclose a motive or say what led them to the suspect. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
