WINFIELD, W.Va. (AP) - A Hurricane man has been sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole in the death of his infant son.

Robert Jeremy Smith was sentenced Friday in Putnam County Circuit Court.

The body of Smith’s 5-week-old son, Madden, was found in a car in the Kanawha City section of Charleston in May 2014.

Smith pleaded guilty in June to murder of a child by refusal or failure to provide necessities.

WCHS-TV (https://bit.ly/1UHGnIk) reports the 34-year-old Smith took the blame for his son’s death at the sentencing.

Smith initially told police Madden died after he accidentally dropped him, but later admitted to shaking the child. A criminal complaint showed Smith waited more than a day to call for help.
