GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Glendale are checking hospital emergency rooms for a woman who may have just given birth after a newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster behind a grocery store.

Police Sgt. David Vidaure says a couple going through the trash bin found the newborn boy early Saturday morning and immediately called police. The boy was dead when police and firefighters arrived.

Vidaure says detectives don’t believe the baby was born in a hospital and are asking for the public’s help identifying the mother. People are being asked to be particularly mindful of pregnant women who suddenly and mysteriously no longer appear pregnant and don’t have the baby.

The dumpster was behind a Food City store at 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
