CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Police say an 80-year-old man taking part in a bicycle race in Rhode Island has died after crashing into a parked pickup truck.

Charlestown police said the man was riding southbound on South County Trail when he struck the rear of the pickup at around noon on Saturday. The truck, with two people inside, was parked in the breakdown lane.

Police said the man had a helmet but sustained severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at South County Hospital.

Police said fellow cyclists told officers the man was taking part in the North East Master Cycling Association race being held in Richmond and Charlestown.
