DETROIT (AP) - DTE Energy officials say a utility employee is being treated at a hospital after being shot in the hand while working in Detroit.

The company said in a statement the worker was in his company vehicle early Saturday on the city’s east side when he was approached by a man with a gun. DTE says the gunman knocked on the vehicle’s window and the worker started to drive away after seeing the weapon, but he was shot in the thumb.

Trevor Lauer, a DTE senior vice president, says the employee was involved in restoration activities after overnight storms knocked out power in the area. Lauer tells WWJ-AM “it’s really disappointing to see this behavior.”

The company is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
