CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities say a man has been shot and seriously injured by a Chicago police officer during a traffic stop.

Chicago police said in a statement late Saturday that officers pulled over a vehicle on the city’s South Side just before 8 p.m. As they approached, the allegedly backed into another car and then accelerated toward the officers.

Police say the officers were “boxed in” by the offender and traffic stopped at a red light. Officers say they feared the vehicle may have been used as a weapon.

An officer fired shots into the vehicle, striking the driver. Fire officials say he was hospitalized in serious-to-critical condition.

Police say a passenger had a loaded gun and was arrested at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
