SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say they believe a motorcyclist who was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday shot himself during a traffic stop south of Salt Lake City.

The Unified Police Department says officers stopped 35-year-old Michael Huggard in Midvale around 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

Det. Ken Hansen says Huggard became confrontational with officers and pulled out a gun. He says Huggard intentionally shot himself in the head during the confrontation.

Huggard was in critical condition Sunday.

Hansen said Sunday afternoon that because an outside police agency is investigating the shooting, he couldn’t release details about whether the two officers involved also shot at Huggard or how many gunshot wounds the man had.

Hansen says two officers involved have been put on administrative leave as the Salt Lake Police Department investigates.
