GEDDES, N.Y. (AP) - A new monument honoring dogs who served in the military is coming to the New York State Fairgrounds.

The War Dogs Memorial will be unveiled during the fair’s annual Armed Forces Day ceremony on Sept. 3. Military working dogs and service dogs that aid veterans will be on hand.

The marble memorial features an image of a combat veteran and a dog. A plaque says the monument is dedicated to military dogs and handlers who “gallantly served in war and peace.”

Acting State Fair Director Troy Waffner says the memorial will pay tribute to dogs who have served during wartime, and will also serve as a special reminder of the thousands who have been killed in action.

The monument was created by the Eagle Association of Central New York.
