TREMONT, Ill. (AP) - A Tazewell County sheriff’s deputy killed in an accident while responding to a domestic violence report has been laid to rest.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1NbstNi ) hundreds of police officers from throughout Illinois led a procession on Saturday from Tremont to Dillon Cemetery, where Craig Whisenand was buried.

He was remembered as a civil servant, loving husband and devoted father.

The 44-year-old was responded to a disturbance report last week. County Coroner Jeff Baldi has said the squad car was found near a tree it apparently struck while airborne. Authorities haven’t said why Whisenand apparently lost control of the vehicle.

Another deputy discovered the accident. Whisenand was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy says multiple blunt force trauma was the preliminary cause of death.
