PITTSBURGH (AP) - Officials say a 1-year-old girl has died following an apartment building fire in Pittsburgh’s Spring Hill neighborhood that forced multiple residents from their homes.

Flames were seen from a unit of a Rhine Street apartment building just after midnight. Fire officials believe the blaze began on the first floor but caused smoke damage throughout the building.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office says Nina Risher was pronounced dead from injuries suffered in the fire at 12:27 a.m. Monday at UPMC Mercy hospital.

Officials say at least nine people were taken to the hospital for treatment for various injuries and smoke inhalation.

Arson investigators were called to the scene to look into the cause of the fire.

Assistance to displaced residents is being provided by the Red Cross.
