PENFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Champaign County coroner says a 2-year-old central Illinois girl apparently drowned during a family camping trip to Middle Fork Forest Preserve.

Coroner Duane Northrup says an autopsy is planned Monday on Kendra Spanglo-Lindsey of Rantoul. Champaign County sheriff’s office officials say they’re investigating the girl’s death. She was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 10:38 p.m. Sunday.

Sheriff’s Lt. Curt Apperson says Kendra was at a beach with family members when they couldn’t find her. He says family members and Forest Preserve authorities searched for her with canines. Apperson says a family member found the girl in the water and brought her to shore. Deputies and medical personnel did CPR.

The forest preserve is in Penfield, about 30 miles northeast of Urbana.
