SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Three people have died after the car they were riding in sideswiped another vehicle and burst into flames in El Sobrante.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1NdnyLO ) that the crash happened about 10 p.m. Sunday.

California Highway Patrol officials say four people had been in a Chevrolet Camaro heading east when the driver sideswiped a westbound car and lost control.

The Camaro slammed into a tree and caught on fire. The driver managed to escape but suffered major injuries.

It was not immediately known whether the three passengers who died were killed as a result of the crash or the fire.

The driver of the car that was hit sustained minor injuries.

CHP officials are working to determine whether speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
