STANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an 87-year-old man has died while swimming with his granddaughter in Lake Superior.

The Mining Journal of Marquette reports (https://bit.ly/1MtQFco ) authorities believe the Upper Peninsula man had a heart attack on Saturday, but confirmation was pending the results of an autopsy.

The man was from Houghton County’s Stanton Township. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The sheriff’s department says he was found in around 6 feet of water about 30 feet offshore. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities say the 11-year-old girl tried to help her grandfather but he told her to go back to shore. When she did, she turned to look for him and he was gone.
