TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) - The Coast Guard says a 22-year-old surfer has been rescued near Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon coast.

The Coast Guard says it received reports that a surfer was in distress Sunday afternoon. He was reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness.

While the air crew and another boat crew were on their way to the scene, bystanders were able to lift the surfer out of the water and on to a rock formation.

The helicopter crew later hoisted the man to Pacific City Airport. He was later taken to a hospital in Portland.
