MERRICK, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a man trying to fix his boat’s motor was injured after the engine exploded and set fire to his vessel on Long Island.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1KqMutj ) the 43-year-old man was boating Sunday in Sea Dog Creek off Freeport when he began experiencing engine problems.

Nassau police say the man piloted his vessel to the rear dock of a home on Hewlett Avenue in Merrick where he started working on the engine. The engine erupted soon after, burning the man’s face, arms and legs.

The man was transported to an area hospital, where his condition was unclear.

The Merrick Fire Department was called to extinguish the blaze.
