SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Enrollment is on the rise at Missouri State University, largely due to the biggest increase in first-time students since 1987.

The university said Monday that it opened its fall semester with 20,334 students, an all-time high and a 2.6 percent increase over last year. The number of first-time students enrolled is 3,194 up nearly 14 percent from last year.

The numbers won’t be official until the census taken on the 20th day of classes.

The all-time record for first-time students at Missouri State is 3,747 in 1989, but that was before the university implemented more stringent admission requirements.
