MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a former nursing home worker has been convicted and sentenced for hitting a resident.

Attorney General Luther Strange said in an emailed statement Monday that 31-year-old Elsie M. Sawyer pleaded guilty to abuse of a protected person in Mobile County Circuit Court.

Officials say Sawyer worked as a certified nursing assistant at Crowne Health Care. She was indicted in December 2014 for hitting a resident and injuring the woman’s face.

Strange says Sawyer’s three-year prison sentence has been suspended - meaning she will serve that time on probation. She must also complete an anger management course.

Strange says Sawyer is also banned from working in a care facility that receives Medicaid or public health funding.
