MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Drive-by shootings in this middle Georgia city have kept police and sheriff’s deputies busy for the past month.

In Milledgeville and areas of surrounding Baldwin County, at least 14 dive-by shootings have been reported since mid-July, authorities said. Milledgeville has fewer than 20,000 residents.

“We have been closely working the neighborhoods,” Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee told WMAZ-TV (https://on.wmaz.com/1LgOj1L). “We have served warrants on some people that we have been looking for the last several weeks. We’re actively working the area where we are having the shootings and the problems.”

Fortunately, only two people have been wounded by drive-by gunfire reported since July 14, according to police. In other cases, bullets have struck homes and cars.

Milledgeville police Maj. John Davis said the latest shootings happened over the weekend. Two vehicles were damaged by bullets Friday night, he said, and several gunshots hit a house Sunday night. No one was hurt in either of those cases.

Police and sheriff’s investigators say they suspect at least some of the drive-by shootings are gang related. No arrests had been reported Monday.

The group Macon Regional Crime Stoppers has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrests.

The sheriff said warrants being served by his deputies are not directly related to the shootings. But he hopes those arrests lead to tips that help investigators find those responsible for the drive-by shootings.

Located about 90 miles southeast of Atlanta, Milledgeville is a city of about 18,000 people. Surrounding Baldwin County has a population of about 46,000, according to the 2010 Census.
