SANDSTONE, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say a hiker has died after falling off a cliffside trail overlooking the New River Gorge National River in southern West Virginia.

The Summers County Office of Emergency Services says two hikers slipped Sunday night on a trail near the Sandstone Falls Overlook, which is about 600 feet above the river. One of the hikers called 911, and emergency crews found the pair about 80 feet below the trail.

The EMS office says one of the hikers was declared dead at the scene and the other was taken to Raleigh General Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The hikers’ names weren’t immediately available.
