SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A man in his 20s drowned in the American River this weekend, marking the sixth drowning in Sacramento County this summer.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1LgnVVR ) that the man was found in the American River Sunday after reports of two or three young adults missing in the river. His name has not been released by authorities.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Battalion Chief Chris Quinn says a helicopter, rescue boats and paramedics were summoned after the missing people were reported. A helicopter crew spotted the man in the water who appeared to be submerged.

The victim was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say many of the people who drown are young men who overestimate their swimming abilities.
