DETROIT (AP) - Officials say potholes are to blame for snarling traffic and damaging a number of vehicles during the morning commute in Detroit.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross tells The Detroit News that repair crews were notified on Monday of problems at the Rouge Overpass, which caused a traffic jam on northbound Interstate 75 at the bridge that crosses the Rouge River.

WWJ-AM reports roughly two dozen vehicles were damaged. The Detroit Free Press reports the backup stretched more than two miles.

Two lanes of I-75 were closed so crews could make repairs. Motorists were urged to avoid the area if possible.
