PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence has hired a Boston-based consulting firm to oversee a study on a proposed downtown streetcar line.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1PvIU5s ) HDR Inc. will be paid $1.7 million for the planning and engineering services study. The company helped the city craft its original plans for the streetcar project several years ago.

Bonnie Nickerson, the city’s director of planning, says the study will help refine the cost estimate and allow the city to apply for additional federal funding.

City officials have said the proposed 1.6-mile streetcar line would cost $100.2 million.

Providence’s Board of Contract and Supply and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development still need to approve the contract.
