SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - A San Luis Obispo man has become the first person on record to swim across Estero Bay, located north of the city.

The Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1JbhFrH ) that 57-year-old Dave Van Mouwerik completed the 14.4-mile swim in just over eight hours Sunday. He began at China Harbor, north of Cayucos, and ended at Spooner’s Cove at Montana Oro.

Van Mouwerik’s marathon swim was followed by a boat, which navigated his course. There was a support crew of five people on the vessel who documented the swim and made sure it was accomplished within international marathon swim rules.

Van Mouwerik says he has been training for roughly a year at local gyms, pools and Avila Beach. He is planning a freshwater swim in May in Arizona.
