HANOVER, Ind. (AP) - A southeastern Indiana sheriff says a man who was shot dead after charging at deputies was not armed.

Jefferson County Sheriff John Wallace said in an email Monday that 43-year-old John Unsworth of Hanover was unarmed when he was fatally shot early Saturday.

Wallace says “there were a number of significant factors that led the deputy to use lethal force.” However, he said he could not elaborate because the shooting is under investigation by Indiana State Police.

State police say Unsworth was charging deputies in a “highly agitated manner” after being struck with several charges from a stun gun and ignoring officers’ verbal commands.

Deputies were responded to a disturbance at a house in Hanover, about 40 miles northeast of Louisville, Kentucky.
