LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a suspected flag thief who became unresponsive after his arrest.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1histhN) Baldwin Park Police officers arrested an unidentified man on suspicion of stealing a flag and pole from a gas station and swinging it at drivers and pedestrians.

A statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says the man was holding a flag when officers approached him and he attempted to run. He struggled with police and, once handcuffed, the statement says the officers noticed he was “no longer responsive.”

He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is assisting Baldwin Park police in the investigation.
