FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in Fresno County have ordered mandatory evacuations in the Hume Lake area that will affect about 1,000 people after a wildfire crossed over a highway.

Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday Highway 180 will remain closed in the area until authorities determine it is safe to reopen.

The wildfire is burning in a remote area of the Sierra National Forest and grew to nearly almost 37 square miles with zero containment Tuesday. The blaze in Fresno County was sparked by lightning.

Fresno officials say no one is being allowed to enter the area near Hume Lake, a reservoir that is one of Sequoia National Forest’s most visited destinations.
