ATLANTA (AP) - Police say a homeowner trying to protect his family was shot in both of his legs by gunmen who stormed into his Atlanta home.

Atlanta police say Michael Lash, his wife Whitney, their 2-year-old son and infant daughter had just returned home when four men knocked on their front door Sunday evening.

Atlanta police Officer Ralph Woolfolk said the suspects claimed their vehicle had broken down and asked to use a car jack before trying to force their way inside.

Michael Lash’s mother-in-law, Jessica Huffman, said the suspects shot him first in one leg, and then the other. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police said Whitney grabbed her infant daughter and the suspects fired twice at her and the baby, but missed. She ran to a neighbor’s home.
