LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Islam Slimani struck a late winner as Sporting Lisbon defeated CSKA Moscow 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Tuesday.

Slimani stroked the ball past CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev in the 82nd minute after a one-two with Andre Carrillo, who fed the ball to the Algerian with an elegant backheel while under pressure.

Minutes earlier, Slimani had appealed in vain for a penalty when the ball struck CSKA defender Vasily Berezutsky’s outstretched arm as the pair went for an incoming ball.

Sporting had taken the lead in the 12th minute when Bryan Ruiz and Teofilo Gutierrez broke through CSKA’s offside trap, with Ruiz leaving Akinfeev stranded before giving Gutierrez the ball for a simple finish.

In his first start for CSKA since returning to his former club on loan from Roma, Seydou Doumbia lacked sharpness early on but displayed excellent fitness and technique to level the game at 1-1 on 40 minutes. He picked up a defense-splitting pass from Roman Eremenko and fought away from a challenge before striking low into the net.

Doumbia had seen his 27th-minute penalty saved by Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio after Zoran Tosic had been brought down by Jefferson in the box.

In a hectic first half, both sides had chances to score, with CSKA coming close when Tosic rounded the goalkeeper but his cross for Doumbia was cut out by Paulo Oliveira’s header. At the other end, Slimani blasted the ball into the side netting from close range.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since CSKA beat Sporting 3-1 at the same stadium in the 2005 UEFA Cup final.

The second leg will be played in Russia on Aug. 26.
