LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville has granted reserve quarterback Tyler Ferguson’s request for his release and will transfer from the program without playing a game.

The 6-foot-4, 217-pound Californian played five games at Penn State in 2013 before transferring to Louisville and sitting out last season per NCAA rules. Ferguson had hoped to compete for the starting job, but the Cardinals are loaded at QB with Reggie Bonnafon, Will Gardner and Kyle Bolin returning after having played in 2014. Coach Bobby Petrino is expected to announce his decision soon.

Freshman Lamar Jackson has also been impressive and is considered the fourth choice ahead of Ferguson.
