LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Lynchburg College is considering changing its name to a university.

President Kenneth Garren tells The News & Advance (https://bit.ly/1JmJFyW ) that possible options include University of Lynchburg and Lynchburg University. Another option could be a name referring to the Central Virginia area as a whole.

Consultants began holding focus groups about the proposal last week.

Garren says the college’s strategic planning committee recommended a name change. Faculty members also favor the idea.

Enrollment in the private college’s 17 graduate degree programs has increased from about 390 to more than 600 since 2010. The programs include two doctoral programs.

Junior Matt Lamplugh says he’s concerned that changing the school’s name to university would deter prospective students looking for a small-college experience.
