PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A second man has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of an Army veteran in Providence.

Authorities announced Monday that 26-year-old Jose Rodriguez was arrested at a Providence home last week. Rodriguez was being held pending a court appearance.

Rodriguez and 18-year-old Erico Montalvo have been charged in the killing of 26-year-old Colby Mendonca. Authorities say Mendonca and a friend were stabbed during a fight with strangers on July 11.

Prosecutors say Montalvo later said he stabbed both men.

Rodriguez was referred to the public defender’s office but hasn’t yet been assigned an attorney. Montalvo’s lawyer declined to comment outside a courtroom last month.

Mendonca, who served in Afghanistan, leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
