BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A McKinley High School junior has been arrested after bringing a loaded handgun to school.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks says a 17-year-old boy was booked Tuesday into the parish jail on counts of illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and having a gun with an obliterated serial number.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1NiovT6 ) the teenager had the .380 caliber weapon in his book bag but claimed he didn’t know how the weapon got there. Hicks says the arrested student had been in a fight with another student at a bus stop, and once he arrived at school, administrators searched both students and found the weapon.

It was unknown whether the teenager had an attorney who could comment on the case.
